Digitization of Church Records

The Archives of the Episcopal Church does not support the transfer, in any form, of church records to for-profit commercial enterprises for resale. We do not encourage using Ancestry.com or other similar services for the preservation of and access to the sacramental records of The Episcopal Church’s congregations.

In collecting, registering and vouching for the authenticity of these records for its baptized members, the church makes a tacit commitment to treat the records as testimony to sacred acts. These belong to the church who should endeavor to make them available only to those parties with a legitimate need to know their content. This type of access is within the resources of most church bodies and is not a responsibility that should be lightly relegated to third-parties motivated by a profit interest in private personal data.
