Resolved, That the Executive Council, at its meeting in New York City, November 3-6, 1989, recognizing the General Convention's call for a policy and action statement on the global environmental crisis, support the following principles concerning the environment being proposed in Congress which:

  1. affirm that the survival of all living creatures is inextricably tied to the fate of the Earth's environment;
  2. advocate the need for an international effort to confront the global environmental crisis;
  3. treat our country's environmental problems as a grave long-term national concern;
  4. deal comprehensively with the issues of global warming; stratospheric ozone depletion; extinction of species; air pollution; surface water and ground water pollution; solid, toxic, and hazardous waste production and disposal; land-use and acid rain;
  5. address the issue of increasing world population in the context of the need for natural resources to support the peoples of the earth; and be it further

Resolved, That the Council commend and endorse the celebration of Earth Day next April 22nd, in concert with many churches and organizations throughout the world, as a sign of the commitment of this Church to its participation in resolving the environmental crisis; and be it further

Resolved, That copies of this resolution be sent to the President, the Secretary General of the U.N., the Director of the Environmental Protection Agency, and chief Congressional sponsors of environmental policy.
