World Relief Octave to Take Place in March

Diocesan Press Service. December 30, 1968 [72-13]

NEW YORK, N. Y. -- A World Relief Octave, to take place from March 9 - 16, was announced recently by the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. The Octave, which is an appeal for the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief, will provide Church members with a special opportunity to help the hungry, the homeless and the ill-educated.

The Fund is the channel through which Episcopalians assist refugees, provide emergency help during disasters, and establish self-help programs in developing countries. Among those aided are Vietnamese refugees, Arab refugees in the Middle East, and the victims of the conflict in Nigeria-Biafra.

Most of the programs are carried out on an ecumenical basis, either through Church World Service or the World Council of Churches.

Decisions on which programs to support and the approval of all expenditures are in the hands of a standing committee of the Executive Council which meets four times a year.

The committee, chaired by the Presiding Bishop, is also responsible for setting an annual goal for the Fund. In 1969, this goal will be $1,200,000 or a mere 30 cents per communicant.
