Special Issues of Anglican Theological Review

Diocesan Press Service. June 15, 1973 [73153]

EVANSTON, ILL. -- A Special issue of the Anglican Theological Review (ATR) will be published this summer in celebration of the bicentennial of the United States.

Scheduled for publication in July, this special number will contain nine essays on the theme "A Creative Recovery of American Tradition: Some Cultural and Counter- cultural Issues. "

Among the contributors are three members of the faculty of the University of Chicago -- Charles H. Long, W. Alvin Pitcher and Gibson Winter.

Other authors are Robert N. Bellah, Institute for Advanced Study; R. Donald Higginbotham, University of North Carolina; Urban T. Holmes, III, the University of the South; Marianne H. Micks, Western College; John R.. Whitney, Pennsylvania State University, and John Woolverton, Virginia Theological Seminary.

The essays deal with such themes as American civil religion, revivals, Black religion in America, racism, and liberty and technology.

The bicentennial issue was proposed by the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church and a committee on the Church's participation in the bicentennial celebration, appointed by the Presiding Bishop, cooperated with the editors of the ATR in planning the volume.

W. Taylor Stevenson of Marquette University, editor of the ATR, said of the issue, "It is obvious to me, and to many others I believe, that the best way to celebrate national history is to pay serious attention to those crucial issues in our present social and national life which have arisen more-or-less directly out of our national history. "

"There are many indications," he said, "that the forthcoming celebrations, and the religion associated with it, will be approached in terms of nostalgia,, nationalism, and special pleading. In the place of nostalgia there should be the admittedly much more difficult endeavor to remember in order, once more, to begin again."

The special bicentennial number of the ATR will be sent to all subscribers of the Review and to all clergy in the Episcopal Church. Individual copies to nonsubscribers are $3.25 each with a discount of 15 percent on orders of 10 copies or more. Orders should be addressed to the Anglican Theological Review, 600 Haven Street, Evanston, Ill. 60201.
