Professor of 44 Years Now a Priest
Diocesan Press Service. September 10, 1973 [73210]
BOULDER, Colo. -- Colorado University alumni make up a loyal clan. When those of Episcopal persuasion return to enroll sons and daughters or to attend games many will find their former 84-year-old professor serving as a priest of the Church.
The Rev. Francis Wolle was a member of the C.U. faculty for 44 years. Not only was he chairman of the Department of English. He founded the University Theatre and served for a time as C.U. 's cross-country and track coach.
When this versatile man retired from teaching in 1957, he read for Holy Orders, was ordained deacon in 1960 and joined the Rev. A. Balfour Patterson Jr. at St. Aidan's, Boulder, as the curate. Because of his age he had expected to remain a deacon. At age 81 he retired again.
Colorado's new diocesan, Bishop William C. Frey, had some plans for his former and much-loved English professor. He wished to ordain him to the priesthood, and this he did last April 28. Practically every priest assisting in the service was a former student of the ordinand. It was a joyous affair.
Now Father Wolle helps as needed at St. Aidan's, and will be greeting friends old and new this fall as C.U. resumes classes.
Mrs. Wolle is the former Muriel Sibell, well known as writer and artist and a former fine arts teacher at C.U.
