WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Very Rev. Francis B. Sayre Jr., Dean of Washington Cathedral, has announced the appointment of Nancy S. Montgomery to be Director of Communications at the cathedral. Editor of THE CATHEDRAL AGE, the cathedral's quarterly magazine, since 1967, Ms. Montgomery has been on the staff since 1962.

Ms. Montgomery has been acting Director of Communications since the death of Hibbard James, former director, last April. She will continue as editor of publications for the cathedral, including the cathedral's guide book series. In 1964 Ms. Montgomery edited "Gloria in Excelsis Deo," a book issued for the dedication of the central tower at the cathedral. Since 1965 she has edited four editions of "A Guide to Washington Cathedral," two editions of "Stitches for God" and the first issue of "Music at Washington Cathedral." She is co-editor of "The Herb Cottage Cook Book" and "The Washington Cathedral Coloring Book" for small children. She frequently speaks on the cathedral to groups around the country and has made several TV appearances for the cathedral.

A graduate of Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts, Ms. Montgomery has done graduate work at the Sorbonne and at American University. She is chairman of the Mount Holyoke Alumnae Quarterly board and a member of the boards of the Associated Church Press and of George Washington University Continuing Education for Women. She is also a member of the Religious Public Relations Council, the National Press Club and the National Organization for Women.

An Episcopalian, Ms. Montgomery was confirmed at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, New York, and married at St. Paul's Cathedral, Boston. During a three-year stay in Paris, she studied cathedral architecture on the spot, visiting the great cathedrals of Europe and Great Britain. She is married to Howard H. Montgomery Jr., a research mathematician.
