Special Bicentennial Tours Set for Washington Cathedral

Diocesan Press Service. August 4, 1975 [75273]

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A special bicentennial guided tour on our religious American heritage as witnessed in Washington Cathedral will be offered in the cathedral starting October 1.

The bicentennial tour will include an introductory talk and walking tour through the cathedral, pointing out with explanation highlights of our early American History -- our struggle for independence -- as seen in stone carving, stained glass and other artistic media. Such items of interest would be: an old brick from the early church in Jamestown; Pocohontas in stone; special windows showing the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth; Captain John Smith; the George Washington story in stone and glass; Bishop Seabury; William Penn; Thomas Jefferson; even the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Arrangements for this special tour should be made three to six weeks in advance of the desired tour date. Please write: Mrs. Frank H. Hammond, Director of Visitor Services, Washington Cathedral, Mount Saint Alban, Washington, D.C. 20016 (202/966-3500, ext. 291) for bookings. A voluntary offering of a minimum of $1.00 per person for this tour is requested; special arrangements can be made for large groups. Additional special-interest tours are now being planned.

Response to the needs of all religious denominations, the cathedral is the scene of state funerals as well as many weddings, baptisms, and other occasions for rejoicing. Among these memorable occasions were funeral services for President Eisenhower and Chief Justice Warren.

The cathedral's docents offer interesting and general tours of the cathedral, sixth largest in the world, Monday through Saturday 10 am to 3:15 pm and on Sundays at 12:15, 1:30 and 2:30 pm. (No tours between noon and 12:45 weekdays.)
