HASTINGS, Neb. -- The Very Rev. James D. Warner, rector of Trinity Church, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, was elected Bishop of Nebraska at a special council at St. Mark's Pro-Cathedral, Hastings, August 27 and 28. The election came on the third ballot. The diocese has been without a bishop since the resignation of the Rt. Rev. Robert P. Varley a year ago. Other nominees were the Rev. Thomas H. Carson of Greenville, S.C., and the Rev. Willis H. Steinberg of Salem, Ore.

Fr. Warner, 52, was born in Wyoming, but grew up in Wisconsin. He served in the Navy during World War II, then attended Northwestern University. A graduate of Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, he has served parishes in Wisconsin and Kansas since his ordination in 1952.

In 1952 he married Barbara Wallgren, who died in 1957 leaving him with two children and a foster son. In 1960 he married Marcy Walk Swan, a widow with three children. They had two more children, making a family of nine.

Fr. Warner has served Trinity Church sine 1970 and is also Dean of the Winnebago Convocation of the Diocese of Fond du Lac.

In other convention action, a proposal to move the diocesan offices from Omaha to Grand Island was defeated.
