SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras -- The Rev. Hugo Luis Pina, vicar of the Church of St. Peter, Tegucigalpa, was elected Bishop of Honduras in the 14th ballot at a special diocesan convention held here December 3-4.
Fr. Pina was one of six candidates for the post. The Rev. James Douglass of St. John the Baptist Church, Puerto Cortes, was runner up in the election. The Rt. Rev. Anselmo Carral, Bishop of Guatemala, in charge of Honduras, presided at the convention.
Fr. Pina was born in Camaguey, Cuba, on Nov. 3, 1938. He holds a B. D. degree from the Union Theological Seminary of Matanzas, Cuba.
He was ordained deacon and priest in 1964. In Cuba he was in charge of the Church of Jesus Nazareno, Santa Clara, and assistant at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Havana. In 1969 he left Cuba and after a short stint in Madrid, he settled in Miami where he became assistant at St. Thomas' Church. He also was rector of the Church of St. Simon, Miami.
In 1975 he became an appointed missionary in charge of the work in Tegucigalpa, Honduras' capital city, where he worked with both the Spanish and English congregations.
Fr. Pina is married to the former Minerva Arias, also from Cuba. They have three children.
The Bishop-elect was named Hugo after the late Bishop of Cuba, the Rt. Rev. Alexander Hugo Blankinghship. His father, Humberto Pina, was a lay reader in charge of La Gloria, a small mission in the diocese.
Fr. Pina has accepted his election subject to confirmation by bishops and standing committees of the Church.
This marks the first time the missionary diocese of Honduras has had a bishop of its own. Bishop Corral -- who is Bishop of Guatamala -- has been bishop-in-charge of Honduras as well since 1973.
