Appointment Process

Advance planning (minimum of 60 days) is very important as on-site research in the Austin Research Office is by appointment only.  The first step in this process is to complete the Research Request Form, which notifies us of your interest and research topic.  Visitors will also be required to complete the Application for the Examination of Archives.  Visiting researchers are advised to complete the application well in advance of a planned visit.  The application should state in detail the purpose of the research, provide evidence of reputation, and identify the objectives and intended products of the research inquiry.  The cover letter is helpful to the curators, who will try to match your request to the holdings using the events, names, dates and topics in your research statement. Researchers returning after an absence of more than a year will be asked to update their application.

The researcher will be notified by email of acceptance.  Due to the limited availability of our Reading Room, researchers are strongly advised not to make travel arrangements before an appointment is confirmed.  Information regarding accommodations and the use of the Reading Room is located in our Information Packet for Visiting Researchers.
