[The Rt. Rev. Jose Gonzale...]
The Rt. Rev. Jose Gonzalez, Bishop of the Episcopal Church in Cuba since 1967, recently visited the Episcopal Church Center in New York, the first visit by a bishop of that Church since the Cuban Church separated from the U. S. Episcopal Church in 1966. At the 1966 meeting of the House of Bishops of the U.S. Church in Wheeling, W. Va., Cuba was established as an autonomous diocese within the Anglican Communion under the care and direction of a Metropolitan Council. Bishop Gonzalez said he hopes his visit will be the beginning of closer relationships "between my diocese and your Church" and that "it will mark a renewal of the links between our churches." He said that two acute problems in the Episcopal Church in Cuba are finances and a shortage of clergy.
