President of the House of Deputies of the General Convention of the Episcopal Church is Dr. Charles R. Lawrence who lives in Pomona, N.Y. He presided over the 1979 Convention following his election to the post in 1976. He is only the third lay person -- and the first black -- in the Church's history to serve as presiding officer of the 904-member House of clerical and lay Deputies. In 1977 he retired as professor of sociology at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. He is also vice chairman of the 44-member Executive Council.
