Joint Declaration Issued by Pope and Archbishop of Canterbury. Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey (left) and Pope John Paul II (right) sign their Common Declaration, a joint statement issued at the conclusion of a three-day visit to Rome by Carey in early December. The declaration expressed hopes for closer ties between Anglicans and Roman Catholics, but noted that serious divisions still remain. Cardinal Edward I. Cassidy, (far right) president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, assists the pope with the document.(Episcopal News Service photo by James H. Thrall)*
