CDSP awards 3 honorary degrees

Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California, awarded honorary Doctor of Divinity degrees to the Rev. Sally Bingham, the Rev. Bill Countryman, and the Rev. John Kater during its 116th commencement May 21.
Bingham, CDSP alumna and canon for the environment in the Diocese of California, has been a significant force in the environmental community for 25 years. She is the founder and executive director of Interfaith Power & Light, a national nonprofit ministry aimed at mobilizing a religious response to global warming.
Countryman is professor emeritus of biblical studies at CDSP. He writes and speaks on a wide variety of topics, ranging from the Bible to gay and lesbian spirituality. He is a prolific author and is perhaps best known for "Dirt, Greed, and Sex," a study of sexual ethics in the New Testament and today, and for "Living on the Border of the Holy," which explores the nature of ministry, lay and ordained.
Kater is professor of ministry development at CDSP and director of its Center for Anglican Learning and Leadership. He initiated the January conferences that came to be known as Epiphany West, intended to enhance awareness and understanding among the members of the worldwide Anglican Communion. He is the author of several books, including "Christians on the Right: The Moral Majority in Perspective," "Making Sense of Life: Theology for Teenagers," and "Finding Our Way: American Christians in Search of the City of God."
