Retired Massachusetts Bishop Suffragan Barbara C. Harris, 80, remains in a Massachusetts rehabilitation center recovering from a stroke, said Tracy Sukraw, director of communications for the Diocese of Massachusetts.

After falling at home, Harris was admitted June 4 to a hospital, where an evaluation determined she had suffered a stroke. On June 8 she was admitted to the rehabilitation facility, where she is reported to be gaining strength, according to the diocese.

On February 11, 1989, Harris was consecrated a bishop, becoming the first woman to be ordained to the episcopate in the worldwide Anglican Communion.

Good wishes and words of encouragement may be sent to Harris in care of the Office of the Bishop, Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, 138 Tremont Street, Boston, MA 02111.
