Archbishop of Canterbury Celebrates ACC Opening Eucharist

Carrying banners from their churches around the world, members of the Anglican Consultative Council processed from Nottingham City Center to St. Peter's Church for the opening Eucharist of their 10-day meeting here.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, celebrated the Eucharist and installed Canon Kenneth Kearon as secretary general of the Anglican Communion.

Preaching at the service, the Rev. Joel Edwards, executive director of England's Evangelical Alliance, spoke about the importance of truth. "The ACC will be concerned with truth, and the Holy Spirit comes to guide us in this truth," he said. "Truth must make sense in mission terms. Truth must include the greater knowledge of Christ."

The liturgy followed the rite of the Church in the West Indies. Music was provided by St. Peter's Choir, which sang a new setting of the World Peace Prayer, composed specifically for the occasion by parish music director Philip Collin.

A gospel choir, Chariots of Joy, joined the celebration.

Prayers were offered by Bishop Maurício José Araújo de Andrade of Brasilia (Igreja Episcopal Anglicana do Brasil); Fung Yi Wong of the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui; Canon Elizabeth Paver from the Church of England; the Rt. Rev. Riah Abu El-Assal, Bishop in Jerusalem; and Dr. Williams.

Lector for the first reading from the book of Acts was ACC vice chair Dr. George Koshy of the Church of South India.

ACC chairman Bishop John Paterson of New Zealand welcomed the council members, who represent 77 million Anglicans in 38 provinces spanning 164 countries. The ACC is the principal consultative and policy-making body in the Anglican Communion.

The parish rector, Canon Andrew Deuchar, welcomed the congregation to the afternoon rites. Built in the year 1187, the church is the oldest structure in Nottingham.
