Lambeth Conference Daily Account: Bishops Duncan Gray III of Mississippi, Dorsey Henderson of Upper South Carolina

Episcopal News Service, Canterbury. August 1, 2008 [080108-01]

Bishops Duncan Gray III of Mississippi and Dorsey Henderson of Upper South Carolina offer the following Daily Account for August 1 at the 2008 Lambeth Conference.

The topic for today was The Bishop and the Anglican Covenant and the Windsor Process.

Bible Study focused on John 15: 1-17: "I am the true vine."

Bible study has crystallized many images -- the image of the vine and the branches, and the question of laying down my life for my friends. Bible study has brought out the extraordinary differences of cultural context in which we do our ministry -- pain, threat, natural disaster, civil war -- that so many are living into and out of.

Also clarifying in Bible study was to look at the question, "What are the fruits of abiding in the vine?" The answer was clear -- love.

In the Indaba group, there were views across the board about the topic of The Bishop and the Anglican Covenant and the Windsor Process. A great deal of support has been heard for staying together as a Communion. A general trend is that people are looking for a way for us to deal with problems but to stay together.
