One of the most influential organists and composers from the French symphonic tradition, Vierne was the organist of Notre Dame in Paris. His Messe Solennelle for choir and two organs was composed in 1900 and premiered at St. Sulpice in 1901, with Vierne and Charles-Marie Widor playing the organ parts. This Mass is a Romantic work of great contrasts, from the majestic writing of the Kyrie to the tenderness of the Agnus Dei. Also remarkable is Vierne's treatment of the organ, with massive organ introductions and interludes by the Grand Orgue contrasted with the Orgue de Choeur accompanying the choir. Both organ parts will be played on St. Bartholomew's magnificent pipe organ.
