Week Ahead: Bishop in Jerusalem to Visit Minnesota

MINNESOTA - The Rt. Rev. Riah Abu El-Assal, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, will make a four-day visit to the Diocese of Minnesota Nov. 6 - 10. His visit comes at the invitation of St. Mark's Cathedral, Minneapolis, and is the final component of a year-long commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the First World Anglican Congress, held at St. Mark's Cathedral in August, 1954.

"Bishop Riah's visit will be an opportunity to make the Anglican world a little smaller," said the Very Rev. Spenser D. Simrill, dean of St. Mark's Cathedral. "It will also highlight an area in the Anglican Communion where people are working together, across personal differences, to focus on mission and bring reconciliation and relief."

Monday, November 8

7:00 p.m. - Bishop Riah presides at Interfaith "Evening of Reconciliation," which will include representatives of other faith traditions, including Judaism and Islam. St. Mark's Cathedral

Other components of the anniversary commemoration have included the Presiding Bishop's Forum on Global Reconciliation, held during the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in August, 2003 and a visit by the Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, the Rev. Canon John Peterson, himself a native Minnesotan.

MONTEAGLE, Tennessee - The Rev. Anthony G. Pappas, area minister for the American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts and noted author of several books on small church ministry, will be the keynote speaker for the Center for Ministry in Small Churches (CMSC) Annual Gathering to be held at the DuBose Conference Center, Monteagle, Tennessee, Nov. 4-6. Workshops will address "Evangelization" and "Developing Lay Ministry," among other key small church issues.

General Theological Seminary in New York City's Professor of New Testament Deirdre J. Good, author of numerous publications, will lead an exciting program on "Decoding DaVinci." Dan Brown's DaVinci Code is a publishing phenomenon. Using the book as a spring board three issues will be considered in three separate discussions: What difference does it make to your faith if Jesus and Mary Magdalene did have a sexual relationship? Does historical fiction uncover truths that historical reconstructions might not? Given ancient sources, what is the particular perspective of Dan Brown on the period of Christian origins?

PORTLAND, Oregon - A Festal Choral Eucharist will be celebrated on All Saints' Sunday, Nov. 7, 10:00 a.m., at St. Aidan's Episcopal Church in the Gresham district of Portland, Oregon.

Music from San Marco, Venice, and Westminster Abbey, two of the great centers of Christian worship in Europe will be sung by the choir.

Beatus vir, Psalm 112, prepared for San Marco, Venice, will be sung at the offertory, accompanied by strings and members of the Oregon Renaissance Band performing on recorders and sackbuts, the forerunner of the trombone.

The Oregon Renaissance Band is an ensemble dedicated to performing and recording music of the Renaissance, played on faithful reproductions of historical instruments, many of which were built by the performers. The Oregon Renaissance Band has presented concerts and workshops since 1991 and has been featured on NPR's "Performance Today". In 1998, ORB performed at the early music festival in Regensburg, Germany. ORB is directed by Philip Neuman and Gayle Neuman.

SULPHUR, Louisiana - Concert and Chili at Trinity Episcopal Church

Laura Boosinger, an award-winning performer and recording artist from Asheville, North Carolina, whose primary focus is the interpretation of traditional music from the Southern Appalachian Mountain region, will perform a concert on Friday, Nov. 5 in the Jubilee Center of Trinity Episcopal Church, Sulphur. Laura's concerts offer a step back to a simpler time, awakening memories for the old and gently instilling important cultural lessons for the young. WILTON, Maine - A silent auction to benefit the Haitian victims of Hurricane Jeanne is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 7 in the North Dining Hall on the University of Maine at Farmington campus. Sponsored by St. Luke's, Wilton, this community-wide event involves churches in the Farmington-Wilton area. The auction will be held from 2 to 4 pm. Entertainment and refreshments also will be provided. Proceeds from this community event will go to the 2004 Haiti Hurricane Relief Fund, which is providing emergency assistance to Haiti through Episcopal Relief and Development of the national church.
