CENTERVILLE, Utah - An original program of unusual readings and musical selections based on scripture from Genesis to the Gospel of Luke will celebrate the season of Advent at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, Centerville, Utah.

"Advent Songs and Stories" was conceived by the Rev. Jane Sigloh, former rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Staunton, Virginia. Mary McDonald was the parish choir director. The two collaborated to tell stories in word and music in a light hearted, yet always reverent look at the events leading to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. It was completed in 1994. The Rev. Sigloh described the program as, "Salvation history in one hour!"

Mary McDonald now lives Kanab, Utah. It was there that she met Virgil Barstad, a gifted violinist, violist and composer. Barstad now shares the narration with Mary and also added a violin part to the musical numbers. With the Rev. Sigloh's blessing, some slight changes in geographical references have been made to accommodate the program's now Western venue. McDonald and Barstad now provide the music for services at St. David's Episcopal Church in Page, Arizona. Some of the non-traditional songs used in the program are from composers like Aaron Copeland, Cole Porter, Benjamin Britten and Felix Mendelssohn. They will bring their Advent program to the Salt Lake area December 1, 7pm, Church of the Resurrection, 1131 South Main Street, Centerville. All are welcome.

Anglicans Under Fire:

Living the Hard Questions

Frank T. Griswold, Michael Battle, & Marck McIntosh

Anglicanism fully honors the dynamic interplay between scripture, tradition, and reason. Those three elements are the key to how Anglicans preach and through those lenses one sorts and sifts questions and concerns that arrive in the life of the church. Preaching is less about how one arrives at an absolute answer than about how the various dimensions that come into play as we live the questions.

Featuring Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold; Michael Battle, Assistant Professor of Spirituality and Black Church Studies at Duke Divinity School; Mark McIntosh, Associate Professor of Theology at Loyola University in Chicago. Double-occupancy room, meals, and program fee $400.

On Sunday, December, 12, 7:00 p.m., in Perry Auditorium of Washington National Cathedral, the three leaders will present: The Anglican Communion: Crucible of Difference. Join in a discussion about the resources we have in our rich Anglican tradition, and how they can assist us as we live the difficult questions of the 21st century. An open conversation will follow presentations by the Presiding Bishop and Professors Battle and McIntosh. This event made possible in large part with support from the St. Alban's Parish Transformation Fund.
