Coming up Thursday, December 16, 2004...

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania - An 80-year-old Courthouse Crèche will be on display in Trinity Cathedral, Pittsburgh, between December 16 and February 2. One of two sets created of plaster-of-paris and fiberglass during the 1920s by the Joseph Poli Company, the collection of 42-inch-high figures stood in the courtyard of the Allegheny Courthouse building for decades. The Cathedral is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays as well as for worship on Sundays.

BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - A performance of Gian Carlo Menotti's opera, "Amahl and the Night Visitors," will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Bethlehem. By far Menotti's best-known work, the opera was composed for NBC-TV in 1951.

Trinity Church Choir will be directed by Laura Johnson and accompanied by Lorenz Maycher on the Aeolian Skinner organ, with additional performers from DeSales University. Soloists include: Linda Laubach, Lauren Cupples, Paul Summerlin and Steve Derstine. The church sanctuary will be used as the stage in what is known as an "environmental theatre" approach.

Coming up Friday, December 24, 2004...

ATLANTA, Georgia - A special Christmas Eve service from the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Philip, Atlanta, Georgia, will be broadcast on the ABC television network under the auspices of the National Council of Churches. The program will air at 1:30 a.m. (ET) on December 25.

The annual broadcast from the Atlanta cathedral has been carried live on ABC-affiliate WSB-TV for more than three decades and is produced by the Episcopal Media Center under the direction of the Rev. Canon Louis C. Schueddig.

Bishop J. Neil Alexander of Atlanta will lead the service and preach a sermon titled "How Far Is It to Bethlehem?" The cathedral's dean, the Very Rev. Samuel G. Candler, will officiate for the celebration of Holy Communion.

Accompanied by the Peachtree Brass, the Cathedral Choir will perform classical Christmas anthems, including works by Willan, Dirksen, Hassler, Carter, Davis and Sowerby. Hymns will include a variety of traditional Christmas carols.

Bruce Neswick, the cathedral's canon musician, will direct the evening's music.

The Episcopal Media Center is an independent nonprofit organization in Atlanta that produces broadcast programming for radio and television, and distributes video and audio resources for Christian education in congregations and homes.

SAN FRANCISCO, California - A Christmas Pageant with Bishop William Swing of San Francisco narrating the Christmas story and all children who attend donning costumes and enacting the events will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 24 in the Nave of Grace Cathedral, San Francisco.

Families and visitors join in singing the treasured carols that complement the story. No lines to learn, just a special costume to wear and with the help of the Cathedral youth, a chance to make a short journey to "Bethlehem." Families should arrive at the Cathedral by 1:30 pm so that children can get into the costumes provided.
