TV spot debuts for Christmas; music is gift of composer, Pasadena parish

[ENS] -- Emphasizing world peace and welcoming viewers to the Episcopal Church, a new 30-second television spot is set to air nationally December 18-26 on CNN Headline News and the related CNN Airport Network.

The spot features the song “Peace on Earth” composed by Kim Oler and Alison Hubbard, and recorded by the choir of All Saints Episcopal Church, Pasadena, Calif., which commissioned the music and lyrics in 1986. Since that time, the song has been sung regularly, and often weekly, during Sunday services at the Pasadena parish, where longtime staff member and peace activist Marty Coleman commissioned the composition to provide gathering music for interfaith “Shalom” workshops.

Oler – a New York City-based composer whose father, Clarke, assisted on the staff of All Saints, and was previously rector of Holy Trinity, Manhattan, and All Saints, Beverly Hills – returned to Pasadena in November to record the spot with the Pasadena parish choir, directed by James Walker. The ad has been produced by Michael Collins, director of multimedia production in the Office of Communication at the Episcopal Church Center in New York. Copyright for the music, which has been used with permission, is held by Oler’s company, Helium Music.

“The synergy that has created this song is a wonderful paradigm for how music can offer a focus point for the kind of energy we need in this world today to create a context for meaningful change,” Older said of the recent recording and creation of the spot, which may be viewed as part of the Episcopal Church’s new online visitor center at http://www.comeandgrow.org/.

The new spot invites viewers to “grow in peace” and reinforces theme “The Episcopal Church welcomes you: come and grow.” The spot features verse one and the chorus of the “Peace on Earth” lyrics: “One Earth, one sky, one God on high, one people here below; one binding theme, one goal, one dream, for all who live and grow: Peace on Earth, shanty, salaam, shalom.”

Dioceses and congregations may join in airing the spot to widen its exposure nationwide; inquiries should be directed to the Office of Communication by e-mail, news@episcopalchurch.org, or by telephone, 212.922.5385.

Overseas dioceses, cathedrals offer global perspectives

[ENS] – Serving the Prince of Peace in unique international contexts, the overseas dioceses and cathedrals of the Episcopal Church offer ongoing ministry and insight addressing issues of global concern and reconciliation.

Christmas services and year-round ministries are currently featured on websites serving the Convocation of American Churches in Europe, the overseas dioceses of Provinces 8 and 9, and the Suffragan Bishop for Chaplaincies, including the Armed Forces (see listing and links below).

These congregations are frequently partners in ministry with neighboring parishes affiliated with other provinces of the Anglican Communion.

Meanwhile, the Rev. Gerald J. Blackburn, the Episcopal Church's director for military chaplaincies, notes that ECUSA military chaplains around the world, including those in Iraq and Kuwait, will be conducting both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services for the troops under their pastoral care. Blackburn assists Bishop Suffragan George Packard; more about these ministries is posted online at http://www.ecusa-chaplain.org/.
