A tenth church has been admitted to full membership in the Consultation on Church Union. The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, formerly an observer-consultant, will send a full delegation to the sixth Consultation, to be held at the Episcopal Theological School, Cambridge, Mass., May 1-4. The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church dates from 1870 when colored members of the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, requested the formation of their conferences into a separate ecclesiastical body.

The Rev. Dr. Leslie E. Cooke, associate general secretary of the World Council of Churches, died Feb. 22 of complications following surgery for a brain tumor. In a statement released shortly after, Presiding Bishop Hines described Dr. Cooke as "a person of rare personal charm and high intelligence... As director of the (World) Council's Division of Interchurch Aid, Refugee and World Service for more than a decade his sensitivity to the requirements of world revolutionary change and world need, especially among the developing nations, gave significant direction to this highly pertinent area of the program of the World Council. "

CROP, Christian Rural Overseas Program, has changed its name to Church World Service Community Appeals. The change was made because CROP was, increasingly, not solely rural, and was authorized to appeal to urban as well as rural areas and ask for cash as well as commodities. CROP began in Kansas in 1947 as the "Wheat for Relief' appeal and recently celebrated its 20th anniversary.

A priest of the Lusitanian Church of Portugal, Dr. Pina Cabral, has been named Suffragan Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Lebombo, Mozambique. The Lusitanian Church of Portugal is in inter-communion with the churches of the Anglican Communion and is a member of the Wider Episcopal Fellowship. It is intended that Dr. Cabral will eventually succeed the Anglican Diocesan Bishop and the existing Anglican Diocese become part of the Lusitanian Church of Portugal.

Seven movies were cited for their excellence by the National Council of Churches Broadcasting and Film managers. At its annual meeting, the board of mangers of the commission announced 1966 awards to Who's Afraid of VirginiaWoolf?, The Sand Pebbles, A Man For All Seasons, And Now Miguel, Born Free, The Russians Are Coming and The Gospel According to St. Matthew. Launched in 1964 to honor American films, these awards were expanded this year to provide for a special citation to an Italian film, Gospel. The first two films were recommended for "mature audiences"; while And Now Miguel and Born Free were cited as outstanding films for children.

A number of leading Christians in South China have been detained and placed in "indoctrination camps" according to the Church Times, London, of Feb. 10. Among those detain- ed are the Anglican Bishop of Fukien, the Rt. Rev. Michael Kwang-hsu Chang; his two assistant bishops, the Rt. Rev. Moses P. H. Hsieh, and the Rt. Rev. Y. T. Liu; and his secretary, Yang Wei-Chung. Leaders of other Christian churches have also been detained.

A Man For All Seasons received the first joint Protestant-Roman Catholic motion picture award. The award, presented by the NCC's Broadcasting and Film Commission and the National (Roman) Catholic Office of Motion Pictures, cited the producer and the playwright for rising above sectarianism in their story of the Roman Catholic martyr, Sir Thomas More.

Churches in Kenya and Tanzania have decided to negotiate a new Basis of Union, as the Interim Basis originally proposed was not acceptable to two churches. The five churches involved are the Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, Moravian and Presbyterian. The task of formulating this new basis has been entrusted to a Liturgy and Doctrine Committee composed of four delegates from each participating church.

The Ecumenical Youth Service will begin its 21st year with more than 30 projects throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America and Canada. Volunteers will perform tasks ranging from constructing and repairing youth and church centers to working in factories alongside migrant laborers.
