Common Texts for Lord's Prayer and Apostle's Creed Proposed

Diocesan Press Service. June 5, 1968 [66-17]

Common English versions of both the Lord's Prayer and the Apostles' Creed have been proposed by a committee of 11 Roman Catholic, Anglican and Protestant scholars.

Represented on the committee were the Inter-Lutheran Commission on Worship, the Joint Commission on Worship of the Consultation on Church Union, and the International Committee on English in the Liturgy, a Roman Catholic committee under the direction of the episcopal conferences of 12 English-speaking countries.

The tentative texts, which are still subject to change before a final version is generally accepted, are:

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven:

Holy be your Name,

Your kingdom come,

Your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread,

Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us in the time of trial,

and deliver us from evil.

For yours is the kingdom, the power and the

glory for ever. Amen.

THE APOSTLES' CREED

I believe in God, almighty Father,

Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered and was crucified under Pontius Pilate.

He died and was buried.

He went to the dead,

and the third day he rose again.

He entered into heaven

and sits at the right hand of God the almighty Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life eternal. Amen.
