Council Votes Support of Asians from Uganda

GREENWICH, Conn. (-DPS) -- The Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, meeting here September 26-28, voted "to offer its pledge of support to Church World Service in resettlement of Asians from Uganda, if the Federal Government of the United States makes their immigration possible."

The action came in response to the notice of eviction in mid-August of an estimated 75,000 Asians living in Uganda. Approximately 25,000 of these held British passports and the process of transporting them to the United Kingdom has begun, with an expectation that about 12,000 will have left Uganda by the November deadline.

The Council's resolution authorized the staff of the Presiding Bishop's Fund "to express to the appropriate Federal authorities " the Council's support of efforts to secure government action so that some of the displaced Asians from Uganda may enter the United States.

The Council also pledged its support to the World Council of Churches in "whatever action it is possible for them to take in alleviating the suffering of these people."
