Memorandum: Religious News Service

Diocesan Press Service. March 9, 1973 [73074]

The Diocesan Press Service subscribes to Religious News Service, receiving daily news stories, domestic and overseas, in the world of religion. RNS is willing, as an extension of the DPS subscription, to offer a very special group rate to our domestic diocesan publications.

RNS will offer this service, plus a weekly feature service at no additional charge, for $45.75 per month ($35 for the service, $10.75 for first class postage) to our diocesan publications, which have a limited, regional circulation. The cost for publications with national coverage is several times this rate. One of our diocesan publications subscribes now and several of our national publications subscribe. The special rate for diocesan publications is possible as an extension of our DPS subscription (for which we pay several times the above quoted rate).

RNS contains a great deal of background material on many of the religious and moral issues of today, in addition to a wide range of "hard news " stories in the religious area. In 1973 there will be many stories on tax exemption, abortion, parochial aid, women in the church, evangelism, the Jesus and charismatic movements, ecumenism -- to name but a few. The weekly feature, The Week In Religion, deals in some depth with one particular issue that is newsworthy at the moment. The overseas material contains a large number of articles on what is happening in the Anglican Communion. And, there are many stories on the Episcopal Church at the national, diocesan and parish levels.

RNS welcomes stories from all over the Episcopal Church for publication consideration, though RNS has to judge the appropriateness of the stories which are submitted. With a number of our diocesan publications as subscribers, this could be a larger extension of our DPS switchboard service. Practically all of the secular daily newspapers and many of the major radio and television stations are RNS subscribers.

Note that DPS release #73073 in this mailing is from RNS, indicating the depth in which an event is covered.

Please let me know if there is interest in subscribing to RNS at this special rate.
