Eucharist Set Presented to Seattle Cathedral

Diocesan Press Service. August 4, 1975 [75272]

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- In accordance with the expressed wish of the late Bishop Stephen Bayne, a paten, chalice and ciborium, concompassing his jewelry and designed by the Rev. Canon Edward West, New York City, has been given to St. Mark's Cathedral, Seattle, Washington. Bishop Bayne was consecrated there in 1947 and served the Diocese of Olympia until 1960 when he was appointed Executive Officer of the World-wide Anglican Communion.

Included in the set are his pectoral cross from Olympia inlaid in the center of the inverted paten. The base of the stem of the chalice holds the arms of this pectoral cross. A single point in the base of the paten and ciborium is worked by a single diamond cuff link.

Underneath the stem of the ciborium lies a silver pectoral cross with a cutout Shepherd's crook and twelve points, denoting our Lord and the twelve disciples. It was given to him to mark a "first time " conference of representatives of the various Anglican Churches of North and South America held in Cuernavaca, Mexico. In the upper arms are a pair of gold cuff links that mark the diocesan boundaries of Olympia and Spokane.

The knop of the ciborium is made from one segment of a silver bracelet given by Bishop Bayne to his wife. The knop of the chalice has the other portion. The handle of the cover of the ciborium is made from earrings matching the bracelet.

Inset in the arms of the chalice is the Bishop's gold seal ring as the Anglican Executive Officer. The chalice also contains matching gold cuff links with the arms of the Diocese of Olympia.

When he died in January 1974, Bishop Bayne was a professor at General Theological Seminary and Assistant Rector of the Parish of Trinity Church in New York City. It is hoped that a chair of ascetical theology, as a memorial to him, can be established at General Seminary. Contributions are still being accepted.
