NEW YORK -- The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. and Rt. Hon. Donald Coggan, spiritual leader of the 46.7 million, worldwide Anglican Communion, of which the Episcopal Church is a part, will make six stops in the East and Midwest during a 12-day visit to the United States in September.

Following a private visit in Princeton, N.J., Dr. Coggan will join the Very Rev. Francis B. Sayre Jr., dean of Washington Cathedral, for the dedication of the cathedral's completed nave at the 11 a.m. service on Sunday, September 12.

The service will focus on the cathedral's continuing role as an instrument of the Anglican Communion. The nave has previously been dedicated on July 8 for the reconciliation of the peoples of earth, marking the visit of Queen Elizabeth H to the nation's capital; for the service of the nation on July 4, with a sermon by the Rt. Rev. John M. Allin, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church; for the service of the Church on June 5; and for its basic purpose of Christian worship last Easter Eve.

During a visit to the Diocese of Bethlehem, the Archbishop will receive an honorary degree from Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa.

On Thursday, September 15, Dr. Coggan will join with Episcopalians, both clergy and lay persons, in the Diocese of Long Island for an evangelism conference. That evening he will lead a festive celebration of the centennial of the Cathedral of the Incarnation, Garden City, N.Y., during which he will preach.

On September 16 the Archbishop will fly to Minneapolis where he will spend several days at the triennial meeting of the General Convention of the Episcopal Church. He will address the two Houses of Convention -- Bishops and Deputies -- and meet with Bishop Allin and the nine bishops who are presidents of the provinces of the Church to discuss plans for the 1978 meeting of the Lambeth Conference. On Sunday, September 19, at 11 a.m., he will preach at a celebration of the Holy Eucharist and at the Ingathering of the United Thank Offering.

On his homeward journey from Minnesota to London, Archbishop Coggan will stop in New York City to preach twice on Monday, September 20 -- at a midday service at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Fifth Avenue, and at a late afternoon service at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on Amsterdam Avenue.
