Primate to Preach at Washington Cathedral

The Most Rev. and the Rt. Hon. Donald Coggan, the Archbishop of Canterbury and head of the Anglican Church throughout the world, will preach at Washington Cathedral on Sunday, October 14 at 11 a.m. The U.S. Episcopal Church is one of 26 autonomous churches in the Anglican Communion.

Dr. Coggan last visited the cathedral in 1976 when he preached at the dedication of the nave on September 12.

Dr. Coggan, who has been in his present position since 1974, has announced his intention to retire in January, 1980. He will return to Washington in April, 1980 to conduct a week-long seminar at the College of Preachers at the cathedral. During 1979-1980 the college is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary.

As part of his international ministry for the past six years, Dr. Coggan has been in the forefront of the ecumenical movement, especially in Anglican-Roman Catholic dialogues.

During his visit to Washington, the archbishop will speak at the Virginia Theological Seminary during a three-day convocation from October 15 through 17.
