New York -- The Rt. Rev. John M. Krumm, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio, has been appointed Suffragan Bishop for the Convocation of American Churches in Europe. The announcement was made by the Rt. Rev. John M. Allin, Presiding Bishop, in the House of Bishops on the last day of the General Convention in Denver in September.

Bishop Krumm, who reached the age of 66 last March, expects to take over the European post in April following his retirement from the Southern Ohio jurisdiction. The Rev. William G. Black of Cincinnati will be consecrated bishop coadjutor of that diocese on November 8 and will succeed Bishop Krumm upon his retirement.

As the Presiding Bishop's Suffragan in Europe, Bishop Krumm will be responsible for Episcopal congregations in Paris, Rome, Florence, Geneva, Munich and Frankfurt and for Episcopal clergy serving in some of the 25 American union churches and in Church of England chapels on the continent.

Bishop Krumm said he will probably live in Paris or Geneva. Bishop Richard Millard -- who is 65 and who has been bishop-in-charge of the convocation since 1978 -- makes his home in Paris.

Bishop Krumm, a native of South Bend, Ind., has been Bishop of Southern Ohio since 1971.

"This is going to be my 'Berlitz Christmas,' " Bishop Krumm said in an interview in his office in Cincinnati. "My best language is Spanish. I can preach in that. My next best are Italian and French. German is hard for me."

But with tapes and books, he said, he hopes to be ready by Easter for his new European post.
