New York -- The Rt. Rev. John M. Allin, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, has appointed the Rt. Rev. G. Edward Haynsworth to be Partnership Officer for Latin America on the World Mission in Church and Society staff at the Episcopal Church Center.

Bishop Haynsworth will continue to be Bishop-in-Charge of the Diocese of El Salvador, where he has served since 1969, as well as provide episcopal oversight for the Diocese of Nicaragua.

In his new post, Bishop Haynsworth is responsible for programs and relationships with churches of the Anglican Communion and the wider ecumenical community of churches throughout South America.

He also has special responsibility for planning and coordinating the work of the dioceses of Province IX of the Episcopal Church in Mexico, Central America, northern South America and the Caribbean. The work of the Episcopal Church throughout this region encompasses more than 20 dioceses and requires continuing contacts with both Roman Catholic and Protestant agencies and organizations.

As Partnership Officer, Bishop Haynsworth is responsible for providing the strategic framework for the Episcopal Church to develop and extend its mission and ministry among the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking areas.

Born in Sumter, S.C., in 1925, Bishop Haynesworth received his B.A. degree from the Citadel in 1946 and his B. D. degree from the school of theology at the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn., in 1949. He holds honorary degrees from both schools. Before his election by the House of Bishops to the episcopacy in 1968, he served churches in South Carolina and Georgia, was rector of St. John's Church, San Salvador, and was canon to the bishop of Costa Rica.

Bishop Haynsworth married Sarah Veronee in 1948 and they have three children.
