  • St. Nicholas' church records a comment from Robert DiLeonardo who designs interiors for gambling casinos in Atlantic City. "My job", he says, "is to create an environment that relaxes the morality of people." If that doesn't refute the claim that bringing casinos into a community won't hurt anybody, nothing will.
  • From a recent lecture: "Good instruction is making the agony of the pupil's decision so great that it can only be solved by thinking."
  • Taiipieces,a publication of the Anglican Consultative Council, reports that during Archbishop Robert Runcie's visit to Nigeria his image had been transferred to balloons which were sold to commemorate his visit. The sales pitch: "Help the Anglican Communion, blow up the Archbishop of Canterbury."
  • Remember Norman Counsin's report on his conversation with Pope John XXIII? Puts a definitive perspective on the issue of war and peace. "The next war," said His Holiness, "will not be man against man, but man against God."
  • The parrot fish of the Red Sea gathers nourishment by chewing off bits of coral, extracting the nutrients, and passing the residue as fine layers of inert sand covering the sea bed. Like some church-goers which extract all they can and leave no nurture in their wakes.
  • Ten-year-old's note to an aunt after receiving a pair of knee-warmers for Christmas: "thank you; but not very much." Would we could be as candid -- and refreshing.
  • And finally a notice in a parish church bulletin read, "Wanted: able-bodied sexton to menace (sic) our church properties. Speak to the rector about your qualifications." Something every rector wants to know, we are certain.
