Anglican Forum Discusses Mission

Episcopal News Service. December 8, 1988 [88270B]

NEW YORK (DPS, Dec. 8) -- On December 2-7, the Mission Issues and Strategy Advisory Group (MISAG), the international forum for mission in the Anglican Communion, met at the Emmaus Retreat and Conference Centre in West Wickham, Kent, England, in response to the strong imperative for mission called for by the 12th Lambeth Conference this past summer.

When Anglican bishops from all over the world met in Canterbury this past summer, they resolved (Resolution 43) to make the closing years of the twentieth century a "Decade for Evangelism." The Conference, which meets once a decade, encouraged all Anglicans, in cooperation with other Christians, to support this ecumenical initiative.

The Lambeth Conference also (in Resolution 71) called upon the bishops to support the ministry of prayer, "so that we may know God's will for our time and be empowered for the mission of the Lord Jesus Christ."

The work of MISAG is to review, identify, and explore mission issues in the Church in relation to modern ecumenical, theological, and social developments; to review the Partners in Mission process in the Communion; and to respond to requests from member Churches for help in their mission.

Members of MISAG include representatives from the Anglican Consultative Council Standing Committee, the Churches of the Anglican Communion, the World Council of Churches (WCC), consultants, and staff.
