The Rt. Rev. Benito C. Cabanban, retired bishop of the Episcopal Church in the Philippines, died recently of a massive coronary attack in Quezon City. Bishop Cabanban, 78, was the first Filipino to head the Episcopal Church in the Philippines, having been elected in 1967 by the House of Bishops. As leader of the church in the Philippines, Cabanban guided the missionary district's division into three dioceses, thereby setting into motion a process that culminated in the Philippine church's becoming an autonomous province of the Anglican Communion in April 1990. The bishop also served as president of the National Council of Churches in the Philippines and chairman of the Presiding Bishop's Joint Council of the Episcopal Church.

The Rt. Rev. Charlie F. McNutt, Jr., bishop of the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania, recently became the first Episcopal bishop elected president of the Pennsylvania Council of Churches. His two-year term will begin January 1, 1991. The council, founded in 1911, comprises 45 church bodies representing 22 denominations. It promotes ecumenical cooperation and functions as a vehicle for ministry and advocacy. Bishop McNutt currently serves as a member of the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, the Appalachian Peoples' Service Organization, and the board of the Episcopal Society for Ministry on Aging.
