Bishop Dixon Prays at Inaugural Service

Episcopal News Service. February 2, 1993 [93026I]

The Rev. Jane Holmes Dixon, suffragan bishop of Washington, asked for new direction to "break down the walls that divide" during the invocation that she offered at an Inauguration Day morning prayer service attended by President Bill Clinton and Vice-President Albert Gore. Dixon, speaking before an overflow congregation at the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C., said that she was honored "beyond the telling" by her invitation to participate in the inaugural service. The service was held exactly two months after Dixon's own consecration as the third woman bishop in the Anglican Communion.
