Council Employee Works 50 Years

Diocesan Press Service. January 7, 1964 [XVII-7]

Mrs. Johanna L. Lally, the only employee known to have served the National Council for 50 years, was praised for her "continuing and faithful service" by Presiding Bishop Lichtenberger at the December meeting of the National Council.

In a brief ceremony at Seabury House, the Presiding Bishop awarded a parchment scroll to Mrs. Lally. She received a standing ovation from National Council members and staff.

During her long tenure--it began in 1913--Mrs. Lally has worked in one capacity, as secretary to the secretary of the National Council. As such, she has served under three Council secretaries: the Rev. Dr. Franklin J. Clark, the Rev. Canon C. Rankin Barnes, and the Rev. Canon Charles M. Guilbert, present secretary.

Mrs. Lally has served as assistant secretary at 10 General Conventions. She will hold down the same post at the 61st General Convention in October, 1964.

Following the presentation to Mrs. Lally, the Presiding Bishop announced the appointment of five new Council officers and three resignations.

Appointments becoming effective Jan. 1 include those of the Rev. John L. W. Thomas as assistant secretary in the Division of Research and Field Study and the Rev. Richard G. Johns as associate secretary in the new Division of Field Services, Department of Christian Education.

Appointments that became effective on Dec. 15 were those of Miss Mary C. Dick as editor-in-chief of General Publications, Department of Christian Education; Mrs. Paul A. Tate as assistant secretary for Immigration and Resettlement of Refugees, Division of World Relief and Inter-Church Aid, Department of Christian Social Relations; and Mrs. Howard O. Bingley as associate secretary for Supply, General Division of Women's Work.

Also effective Dec. 15 was the promotion of the Rev. Paul Hawkins from executive secretary of Field Study, General Division of Research and Field Study, to associate director of the general division.

Resignations included the following:

The Rev. Kenneth E. Nelson, executive secretary of the Division of Health and Welfare Services, Department of Christian Social Relations, to become Archdeacon of the Diocese of Albany, effective Jan. 1.

John V. P. Lassoe, Jr., executive secretary of the Division of Church-Community Studies, Department of Christian Social Relations, to direct Christian social relations for the Diocese of New York, effective Jan. 15.

Miss Anne Kremer, Associate Secretary for Supply in the General Division of Women's Work. Miss Kremer turned in her resignation on November 15 because of the illness of her parents.

The Rev. Richard S. Young from the staff of the Strategic Advisory Officer. Canon Young had joined the National Council staff in July to conduct on-the-spot studies of hospital, public health clinic, and school health-welfare programs in Central Africa.

Also announced was the termination of the appointment of the Rev. Alexander Jurisson, executive secretary of the Division of World Relief and Inter-Church Aid, Department of Christian Social Relations.
