Resolved, That the 70th General Convention express its solidarity with sugar cane workers and their families in light of the neglect, anguish and terror suffered by all those who live in the Sugar Plantations of the Dominican Republic; and be it further

Resolved, That the Episcopal Church (Anglican) urge the Haitian and Dominican authorities to work to guarantee the human rights of these people as children of God and also to take emergency steps to guarantee the human rights of these people being deported or about to be deported without their earnings, their personal effects, and their families; and be it further

Resolved, That this Convention express its full support and solidarity with the deported Haitians, their broken families, and with the other sugar cane workers through the Dioceses of Haiti and the Dominican Republic; and be it further

Resolved, That copies of this resolution be sent to the governments of Haiti and the Dominican Republic and desk officers for these countries in the Department of State.

Resolved, the House of Bishops concurring, That the 70th General Convention express its solidarity with sugar cane workers and their families in light of the neglect, anguish and terror suffered by all those who live in the Sugar Plantations of the Dominican Republic; and be it further

Resolved, That the Episcopal Church (Anglican) demand that the Haitian and Dominican authorities work to guarantee the human rights of these people as citizens and children of God; and be it further

Resolved, That the Episcopal Church (Anglican) will remain vigilant until such time as the situation which has motivated this resolution has been resolved.

Proposed Committee Amendment:

Resolved, That the Episcopal Church (Anglican) demand request that the Haitian and Dominican authorities work take emergency steps to guarantee the human rights of these those people as citizens and children of God being deported or about to be deported without their earnings, their personal effects, and their families; and be it further

Deputy Chesterman of the Dominican Republic moved an amendment to the proposed committee amendment of C054.

Proposed Amendment:

Between the words "Episcopal Church (Anglican)" and "take emergency steps," insert the words "urge the Haitian and Dominican authorities to work to guarantee the human rights of these people as children of God and also"

The Committee accepted the amendment.

Deputy Sullivan of Virginia moved an amendment to C054.

Proposed Amendment:

In the fourth Resolved clause, following the words "Dominican Republic," add the words "and desk officers for these countries in the U.S. Department of State."

The Committee accepted the amendment.

A vote was taken on C054 as amended.

Abstract:   The 70th General Convention expresses solidarity with sugar cane workers in the Dominican Republic and urges Haitian and Dominican authorities to guarantee the human rights of these people.
