Resolved, That the Executive Council, meeting in San Jose, California, from February 13-17, 1998, expresses its profound hope for improved relations between the United States and Cuba in the wake of the visit to Cuba by Pope John Paul II this past January; and be it further

Resolved, That the Council commends the Presiding Bishop for his participation in an open letter with the heads of Communions and others in issuing "a call for healing of the rift that has divided the people of Cuba and the people of the United States," to include "family reunification through restoring direct flights from the United States to Cuba," and that "the Clinton Administration and Congress lift the restrictions on the sale of food, medicines and medical supplies to Cuba" as first steps in the healing process;

Resolved, That copies of this resolution be sent to the Episcopal Diocese of Cuba, to the Episcopal Church's office of government relations for distribution to the appropriate bodies of government, and reported to the whole church through the Episcopal News Service. (See Appendix E)
