(1) Last summer many students volunteered to serve in projects sponsored by the Council of, Federated Organizations (COFO). Considerable anxiety in many quarters about the impact and reception of this group in Mississippi, led the Commission on Religion and Race to accept an invitation to conduct a training session. Approximately 700 students were trained in Oxford, Ohio, and in subsequent briefings in Memphis and Jackson. Some 300 clergy and lay persons served as Commission volunteers, mostly as "minister- counselors" to the students, or as workers on community centers and voter registration projects.
