The House of Bishops of the Episcopal Church, meeting in Chicago, August 14-15, in a special session called by the Presiding Bishop, adopted a resolution which declared " that the necessary conditions for valid ordination to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church were not fulfilled " at the July 29 ceremony in Philadelphia, when four bishops intended to ordain 11 women deacons to the priesthood. The resolution, adopted 129 to 9 with 8 abstentions, mildly rebuked the four bishops and asked all concerned about the ordination to priesthood and episcopate to "wait upon and abide by" whatever decision the Church's General Convention makes on the issue.
