NEW YORK CITY: Community Festival to be held at St. James -- St. James invites all to celebrate May Day at their Community Festival May 3. The day will include a Spring Boutique form 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. and again from 6:30 - 11 p.m., raffle drawings throughout the evening and a silent auction. Holy Eucharist will be held at 6 p.m.

THE PLAINS, Virginia: Festival of the Arts and Music weekend planned -- The 59th Annual Neighborhood Art Show, Sale and Grace Church Concert series is set for May 5, 6, and 7 at Grace Church in The Plains, Virginia.
Artists of all media, ages and levels of experience are invited to exhibit. Adult entries are $15 each, with a limit of two. Each adult entry includes admission to the Gala Opening May 5, 6-8:30 p.m. Youth entries are $3 for lower school, and $5 for high school, and include admission for the May 6 and 7 showings from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. All proceeds benefit charitable ministries of Grace Church. ST. LOUIS: Flower Festival 2006 at Christ Church Cathedral -- Celebrate the beauty and abundance of spring at Flower Festival 2006 at Christ Church Cathedral, May 5-7. During this annual event that began in 1890, the medieval splendor of the Cathedral, centrally located downtown at 13th and Olive Streets, is arrayed in hundreds of vibrant flowers from Missouri Botanical Garden. This year's guest speaker will be Dr. Horace Clarence Boyer, editor of the African American Episcopal hymnal Lift Every Voice and Sing II.

PACIFIC PALISADES, California: Saint Matthew to host 2006 Stern Lecture -- Some of the most intense controversies in contemporary American society revolve around "family values." What is "a family"? Who deserves to call themselves "a family"? What do the Bible and the Christian tradition have to say about families and family relationships?
The Stern Lecture for 2006 addresses these very topics. This year’s lecturer will be Dr. R. Guy Erwin, the Gerhard and Olga J. Belgum Professor of Lutheran Confessional Theology at California Lutheran University. Erwin will present a series of four lectures entitled "The Household of Faith: Christian Views of Marriage, Family, and Society."

FORT WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania: St. Thomas' Church will host Bill Countryman -- "Praying with the Poets" and "Sexual Orientations: What are the Issues for Anglicans?" are the topics of two workshops led by the Rev. Dr. Bill Countryman, Sherman E. Johnson Professor in Biblical Studies at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific and a member of the doctoral faculty of the Graduate Theological Union. Countryman is a priest of the Episcopal Church and has served in parish ministries for many years. He is the author of a wide range of books on topics relating to scripture, spirituality and ethics.

SAN FRANCISCO: Grace Cathedral hosts organ recital -- Robert Nicholls, winner of the 2000 AGO National Competition in Organ Improvisation, will perform May 7 at 4 p.m., at Grace Cathedral.
He currently serves as director of Music of First Presbyterian Church, Evansville, Indiana. His program will include Reger's "Introduction and Passacaglia in D minor"; Delius's "The Walk to the Paradise Garden," arranged by Dom Gregory Murray; Elgar's "Triumphal March from Caractacus"; and an "Improvisation."

THOUSAND OAKS, California: Matt Harris Jazz Combo to play at St. Patrick's -- The Matt Harris Jazz Combo will play during service, May 7, 10:15 a.m., at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Thousand Oaks. The combo's appearance will mark the continuation of "The Arts at St. Patrick's," a performance series that integrates diverse musical styles into the church experience.
Harris, director of Jazz Studies at Cal State Northridge and a Thousand Oaks resident, is a writer/arranger who has played with Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich, Rita Moreno and Tom Jones. His combo consists of Harris on piano, Domenic Genova on bass and Lee Spath on drums.

DOTHAN, Alabama: Church of the Nativity’s Fine Arts Concert Series continues -- The Nativity Choir and Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Debbie Deas, will perform Franz Schubert’s Mass in G on May 7. The performance is part of Church of the Nativity’s Fine Arts Concert Series. Included in the program will be four Mozart pieces and the Alleluia from Exultate, Jubilate in honor of his 250th anniversary. A reception in the Nativity Memorial Garden will follow the concert. The event is being held in conjunction with the Spring Garden Tour sponsored by the Dothan Botanical Gardens.

WASHINGTON, D.C.: State Day to honor Kentucky -- The state of Kentucky will be honored at the May 21, 11 a.m. service at Washington National Cathedral. As part of its national ministry, Washington National Cathedral has for many years individually honored each state in the union. During worship services, the government and people of that state are prayed for.

NEW YORK CITY: New York Episcopalians will unite for AIDS walk -- Episcopalians in the Diocese of New York will participate as a group in the 21st annual AIDS Walk New York on May 21. This is the fourth consecutive year that the Episcopal Response to AIDS (ERA) will participate as a diocesan coalition to raise funds for AIDS treatment and research. Last year 75 diocesan participants raised more than $35,000.
This year's participation by ERA walkers will have special significance, as ERA has become a community partner organization with Gay Men's Health Crisis, the AIDS Walk sponsor. Diocesan coalition AIDS walkers can now have a portion of their fundraising go toward ongoing parish based AIDS outreach projects throughout the Diocese.
Coordinators for this year's event are Suzanne Culhane, St. John's in the Village, Manhattan, and Donald Snyder, St. Michael's, Manhattan.

Participating panelists include: Diana Butler Bass, a senior researcher at Virginia Theological Seminary and director of the Project on Congregations of Intentional Practice; the Very Rev. Alan Jones, Dean of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco; and Brian D. McLaren, founder of Cedar Ridge Community Church, an innovative, nondenominational church in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area.
