Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has notified the Diocese of Wyoming that Bishop-elect John Sheridan Smylie has received the required number of consents from bishops with jurisdiction and diocesan standing committees to his ordination and consecration.
Smylie was elected the diocese's ninth bishop March 20. His ordination and consecration is slated for July 31. Jefferts Schori will officiate.
Smylie will succeed Bishop Bruce Caldwell, the eighth bishop of the diocese, who will retire in mid-2010 after 12 and a half years as bishop.
Smylie, 57, rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Casper, Wyoming, was elected on the fifth ballot out of a field of six nominees. He received 63 votes of 103 cast in the lay order and 37 of 63 cast in the clergy order. An election on that ballot required 53 in the lay order and 33 in the clergy order.
Before being called to St. Mark's as rector in January 2007, Smylie served for two years as a consultant for the bishop and the Diocese of Wyoming.
As outlined under Canon III.11.4 (a),the presiding bishop confirmed the receipt of consents from a majority of bishops with jurisdiction (diocesan bishops only), and has also reviewed the evidence of consents from a majority of standing committees of the church.
Smylie has received the necessary majority of consents; however, consents will continue to be accepted up to and including the deadline dates of Aug.13 for bishops with jurisdiction and Aug.15 for standing committees.
