Executive Council to meet November 2-4 in Boise

BOISE, Idaho - The Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, an elected body representing the whole Church, will meet November 2-4, 2004 in Boise, Idaho, to carry out programs and policies adopted by General Convention and to oversee the ministry and mission of the Church.

The Executive Council is composed of 20 members elected by General Convention (four bishops, four priests or deacons and 12 laypersons) and 18 members elected by provincial synods.

In the course of the three years between meetings of General Convention, known as the "triennium," the Executive Council will customarily meet once in each of the nine provinces of the Episcopal Church.

NEW YORK - Robert Bolt's play, "A Man for All Seasons," the story of Sir Thomas More's battle with Henry VIII, will be presented as a mini-benefit for the Church of the Holy Trinity's Neighborhood Center Afterschool Program. The fully staged reading, directed by Vivienne Elborne, will include the church's interim Rector, the Rt. Rev. Andrew St. John, in the role of Archbishop Cranmer, and a cast of 14, most of them professional actors.

SOUTH PASADENA, California - The Los Angeles and Western Massachusetts Diocesan Reconciliation Teams will jointly present a Reconciliation Seminar, beginning 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28 through 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 at St. James' Church, South Pasadena. The event will be hosted by the Rev. Anne Tumilty and the people of St. James'.

"Coming at this time in our diocesan life, with the departure of three conservative congregations," says the Rev. Canon Brian Cox, rector of Christ the King Church, Santa Barbara, and co-founder of the reconciliation ministry, "it offers the opportunity for clergy and laity to learn principles and skills of faith-based reconciliation as well as being in an environment of God's transforming power through the Holy Spirit."

The event will begin on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. and conclude on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. Cost for the seminar will be $65.00 ($50.00 for materials and $15.00 for the two lunches). JACKSON, Mississippi - Sudan: A Gathering for Peace and Understanding. Bishop Duncan Gray III, the Sudanese Ministry Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi, and members of the Southern Sudanese Association of Mississippi invite all to a gathering on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 5 p.m. in St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral, Jackson, Mississippi. The evening will be dedicated to peace and understanding in Sudan and is free and open to the public. Recent immigrants will discuss their lives in Sudan and in the refugee camps in Kenya and Uganda, where many of their friends and family are still live. There will be an opportunity to ask questions, eat traditional Sudanese food, listen to traditional Sudanese music, explore traditional Sudanese crafts, and visit with the immigrants informally after discussions and presentations.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota - Magnum Chorum will perform a concert, "Requiem: Songs of Eternal Light," at the Cathedral Church of St. Mark, Minneapolis, on Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. This luminous program for All Saints Day features selections from Rachmaninoff's beloved All Night Vigil and other Russian works by Gretchaninoff and Tschesnokoff. The program will also include John Tavener's Song for Athene, heard world-wide during Princess Diana's funeral, and two works by Edward Elgar: They Are At Rest and Agnus Dei (Nimrod from the Enigma Variations).

SILVER CITY, New Mexico - The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd will hold its 100th annual bazaar Saturday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Parish Hall on the corner of Texas and Arizona streets.

The bazaar - or, as it used to be called, the "Fair" of the Church of the Good Shepherd — has taken place every year since 1904 and, sporadically, even earlier than that.

This year's bazaar will feature a variety of baked goods, reminiscent of the early "teas"; crafts handmade by parishioners (including Sunday school children); Nancy Wyatt's pottery; white elephant items, including special items in a "treasure corner"; books, including the new church cookbook, "Our Daily Bread"; CDs and tapes; vintage clothing; and a garage sale next door in the Good Shepherd House garage.

The bazaar has become known for its brunch, offering omelets, cheesecake, Barbara Baer's apple strudel, ham and turkey sandwiches, and homemade soups. This year, it's called the "Centennial Café."

Proceeds benefit the community, and support youth activities, world missions and church ministries.

SCRANTON, Pennsylvania - The Lyric Consort, an eight-voice a cappella ensemble, will perform two concerts titled, "A Latin American Choral Tapestry," featuring folk songs from South America, Mexico and the Caribbean as well as contemporary sacred music including the regional premiere of Alberto Ginastera's "Lamentations of Jeremiah."
