Foundation Launches Academy for Philanthropy

Episcopal News Service. August 22, 2000 [2000-122W]

(ENS) Bill Andersen, executive director of the Episcopal Church Foundation, announced the formation of the Academy for Episcopal Philanthropy. The first session of the academy will be held November 8-11 at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Atlanta, Georgia.

The foundation recognized the need to further educate clergy and laity about fundraising methodologies for capital campaigns and planned giving, all within the context of annual appeals. "Each year, hundreds of millions of dollars are raised by Episcopal churches for capital projects," stated Andersen. "After a period of study, preparation, and consultation with other Episcopal Church agencies, the foundation is establishing the academy in order to capture and share the methods and strategies that enable Episcopalians to gather the financial resources necessary to advance our common ministries."

The first session of the academy will include instruction on congregational capital campaigns and planned giving. "If our denomination is to grow, we must equip our laity and clergy to harvest gifts. There are proven methods on how to prepare and implement capital and planned giving programs," explained Glenn N. Holliman, president of Holliman Associates in Newport, P.A., who will serve as academic dean of the academy. "We are capturing these methods and presenting them in a concise and orderly manner for the larger church."

Another session is slated for spring, 2001 in Chicago, Illinois, at the headquarters of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This second session will explore diocesan and foundation capital campaigns, planned giving, and annual giving for camp and conference centers, church agencies, and college chaplaincies.
