Crittenden Target of Message
Diocesan Press Service. May 10, 1966 [43-13]
The Rt. Rev. William Crittenden, Bishop of Erie, was the target of the "Let Freedom Ring Committee" in the group's recorded telephone message during the last week of April in the Erie, Pa. area.
The message termed the National Council of Churches a Communist organization and referred to Bishop Crittenden's comments on Vietnam as "Communist line". In response the 56th annual the Convention of the Diocese of Erie and local papers have upheld the Bishop and come out strongly against the tactics of the "Let Freedom Ring Committee". These include innuendos and a "guilt by association" logic.
Bishop Crittenden has also announced that he intends to file a complaint against the organization with the Public Utilities Commission.
