Episcopalians Join in Sponsoring Ecumenical Youth Magazine
Diocesan Press Service. May 10, 1966 [43-8]
Four Anglican and Protestant churches are giving their joint support to the use of one teen-age magazine, Herman C. Ahrens, Jr. the editor of the magazine, Youth, has reported.
Originally a publication of the United Church of Christ, Youth will now also serve teens of the Episcopal Church, the Church of the Brethren and the Anglican Church of Canada.
Mr. Ahrens observed that this joint support will have both ecumenical and economic advantages. "And perhaps we can eventually get the kind of widespread support which will make it possible to improve the magazine's quality and outreach to the extent it can even be competitive on the newsstand and can increase the ministry of the magazine to non- church teens. But that is in the future. Our energies now are to prove that we can produce an effective and relevant magazine for teens."
The Episcopal Church is the third group to adopt Youth magazine. In July of last year, the Church of the Brethren began publishing a "Horizon" edition of Youth magazine to replace temporarily their own biweekly Horizon. In the same month the Anglican Church of Canada began recommending Youth as an interim substitute for Scope, a monthly pocket magazine for Anglican youth, which had ceased publication. However, it is hoped that the current temporary arrangement can become permanent.
The Episcopal Church currently has no magazine for teens and they are expecting Youth to answer this need. Before recommending the magazine, Executive Council's Department of Christian Education tried out the magazine in selected parishes and the responses were positive.
Youth is a biweekly pocket magazine and is the only such publication to be awarded four consecutive Awards of Merit by the Associated Church Press.
