Presiding Bishop Initiates Laymen's Conferences
Diocesan Press Service. January 6, 1967 [50-6]
Some 500 laymen from all over the United States are expected to participate in a series of weekend conferences at the Episcopal Church Center which began last October and will run for about 18 months. These meetings, called by Presiding Bishop Hines, are designed to further communication between the laity and the national church.
Bishop Hines' letter of invitation to the various laymen said that he wanted to sit down with them "in an effort to interpret what the Church is now doing, what we anticipate the Church will do in response to her sense of mission in today's world, and more importantly, to seek from you counsel and information that may help us all."
There were three such conferences in 1966 and to date six more have been scheduled for 1967.
The conferences begin Saturday afternoon and the first order of business is for the participants to indicate subjects they would like to discuss. These are used to establish the agenda. Executive Council participants include the directors of the several departments and Council officers.
