Indian Famine Continues

Diocesan Press Service. June 5, 1967 [55-10]

Today, Indians are selling their bullocks, their tools, eating tree bark... and in the hardest hit areas, such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, they are dying. There have been no reports of men feeding on the dead, but there is documentation of death by hunger or famine-induced disease.

Today we can reach the Indian people quickly with the help needed.

Today the world churches can, and are, supplying the Indian farmers with the means of better crop production: well digging equipment, fertilizer, expert instructors in agriculture, sanitation techniques, pest control.

Today we have the means, the transport facilities, and the abundance, both in wealth and goods, to share with our brothers in time of need, even demonstrating the dignity of people through self-help.

Church World Service and its community appeal, CROP, are fulfilling this obligation. CWS has shipped food, well digging machinery, fertilizer .... but much more help is needed.

Episcopalians can help in this fight through there contribution to the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief.
