Nominating Committees Welcome Suggestions
Diocesan Press Service. August 7, 1967 [56-2]
Do you know someone willing and qualified to take a responsible role in the leadership of the Episcopal Church?
General Convention will be meeting in September and among its major responsibilities is the election of persons to serve on its behalf. The Nominating Committees welcome suggestions and will also hold open meetings during the Convention at which additional names can be suggested and candidacies supported.
Among those to be elected, none are more important than the 3 bishops, 3 presbyters and 5 laymen who will be elected to serve on the Executive Council. Six women will also be elected, but their nomination is made by the Triennial Meeting of the women of the Church.
In thinking over possible candidates, the Nominating Committee of the House of Deputies has suggested that a number of qualifications be kept in mind. They are hopeful that the total membership elected would possess all these qualifications, and that any individual candidate would possess at least three. Qualifications include a broad understanding of public issues; tested and consistent leadership ability; theological acumen; ecumenical experience; competence and experience in voluntary agency program development; familiarity with governmental processes, particularly church government; competence in the areas of communications, social action or community development; capability in financial management; and a willingness to travel and speak publicly on behalf of the church.
Proposed names of presbyters and laymen should be sent to the Very Rev. Almus A. Thorp, Bexley Hall, Gambier, Ohio, convenor of the Committee, or to Angus W. McDonald, 156 Market St., Lexington, Ky. 40507, the Committee's temporary secretary. The names of bishops should be sent to the Rt. Rev. Robert L. DeWitt, 202 W. Rittenhouse Sq., Philadelphia, Pa. 19103.
Other significant Nominating Committees are those for Trustees of the Church Pension Fund (the Rt. Rev. Harry Lee Doll, 105 W. Monument St., Baltimore, Md. 21201) and of the General Theological Seminary (the Rt. Rev. Lauriston L. Scaife, 1114 Delaware Ave., Buffalo, N. Y. 14209 and the Rev. John Clinton Fowler, 500 N. Wilmot Rd., Phoenix, Ariz. 85711).
