Presiding Bishop in Latin America

Diocesan Press Service. December 5, 1967 [60-6]

From November 15 - 24 Presiding Bishop Hines visited the jurisdictions of Ecuador and Colombia.

In both jurisdictions he met with clergy and was involved in a number of ecumenically sponsored events.

In Ecuador he helped celebrate the inauguration of the Ecumenical Theological Library in Quito and appeared on television with the vicar general of the Guayaquil Roman Catholic Diocese, a first in that country. He also met with the Papal Nuncio.

While in Colombia the Presiding Bishop addressed an ecumenical women's meeting of the English speaking community in Bogota, following a Roman Catholic mass celebrated in his honour during a visit to a squatters settlement which is aided by the ecumenical women's group.

During his nine day visit, the Presiding Bishop also addressed the Second Convocation of the Missionary District of Ecuador; participated in the first services in the nearly completed Church of Christ the King, Guayaquil, Ecuador; celebrated at the consecration of the Church of St. George in Medellin, Colombia, built with a 1964 United Thank Offering grant; and preached a Thanksgiving Day sermon for the American community of Bogota.
